Today:

We began our day with a quick attendance before starting some LA.
In LA we did some character descriptions of elves. We watched a few scenes from the Santa Clause, Arthur Christmas, and Rudolph to compare the actions and appearances of different elves.
Students all agreed that elves build toys, help Santa, and are good builders. Students used a graphic organizer to describe the characteristics of Elves...Can (describing what elves are good at), Have (What do elves look like), Are (what are the personalities of elves).

After LA we went to gym to do holiday games before snack.

After snack the students did an art project called snowmen at night.
We use chalk pastels to create light, depth and shadow on a snowman in winter.
Students will be finishing this project tomorrow and bringing it home Thursday!

In the afternoon we started the building of our magnet project!
Students worked in their desks, on the floor, pretty all around the room using a large variety of recycled and craft materials to build their magnet toys. Students made great progress in building their toys today and we will be finishing them tomorrow after lunch before music.

After a mega cleanup we were ready for the end of the day.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with some ipads doing our assignments on mathletics and razkids.

After building our math and reading skills we moved into gym to play some winter games! Snowflake tag, snowball fight and red light green light on the tree to name a few.

During snack we finished the original grinch that we started earlier in the week.

We were joined by our buddies to make some holiday cards for family members. We wont be sending them home until next week!

The students then had their weekly spelling test which again is not for marks. Students wrote their words and then we marked them as a class. Each misspelled word was corrected so the students could see the proper spelling and practice increasing their sight words.

We finished off the day with earned time. We had 30 minutes of earned time this week which we used for building clay, drawing, playing board games and reading.

Twas a great Friday!

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Yesterday:

The students had an absolute blast at Telus Spark! We were able to see almost the entire building.
We started in the energy and motion section exploring ways to create energy through all kinds of movement and activities.
We then moved into earth and sky before heading into the creative playground.
After a quick lunch we headed into the classroom where students did 6 different stations related to the magnet concepts. Once we had explored all the centers we moved back into the science center to the building things area. Students had such a great day and we were able to make it back to school just before the bell :)

Today!

We began our day with the usual ignite and building clay in my room.

After ignite we went to the library and read a holiday story. All books need to be returned next week! I will be sending home any late or missing notices to be found/paid next week.

Students then had gym with Mr Sadowsky before snack in the room.

Today I did a little assessment with the students to see how they are progressing with their letter sounds and blends. We have been using rhyme as a way to build on our word building! Students had to use a chart with all the letters and blends to and color letters that could be used with the _at end sound. Students used letters such as m and s to write mat or sat and even some blends to write fl_at flat.

We then transitioned into math and began to explore addition regrouping using two digit by 1 digit numbers. Remembering to carry that extra 10 is tricky in the beginning but with practice students will get it!

In the afternoon we began to explore the early settlers of the prairies. Today we watched a couple videos on Ukrainians and some traditions they celebrate.

We finished off the day with introducing the students to their new science project.
In connecting with magnet unit the students will be becoming toy makers!
Their task, to build a game or toy that uses a magnet.
Today we did some rough planning. Tomorrow students will be creating their full plan to start building next week! Parents, students will be needing to bring in some supplies to help them build with. Any sorts of cardboard, recycling and other home supplies will be used. I will also bring in some supplies as well!
So please bring in the supplies for Monday!

Have a great evening!

-Starting a magnet project this week! More to come soon :)

Today:

We began our day with the usual ignite. I had the students in my room building with clay!

After our morning meeting we wrote our new spelling words and did work work stations.

In gym we had holiday themed games:
1. Don't leave your decorations in my backyard
2. Snowball fight (Dodgeballs)

After our snack I gave the students some time to free write on any topic of their choice! It has become a Monday favourite!

We finished off our morning with math doing some basic facts, and addition without regrouping.
We did an assessment today that I will be continuing tomorrow to see where students knowledge is with this concept.

In the afternoon the students did a science experiment in which we tried to prove the existence of a magnetic field. Using magnets and iron filings we discovered how magnets will interact when placed to the iron filings! This experiment helped the students see how magnetic fields cannot but seen but definitely exist!

Hope everyone stays warm!
Eat your veggies, drink lots of water, and go to bed early!
Tis the season to get the sniffles!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with our usual morning meeting before writing our first spelling test! As I said early this week, the spelling is not for marks and students mark their own words. This way they do not feel any ridicule for misspelling a word, but rather can build their sight words and see their own corrections of their spelling.

After spelling we had gym in the class doing just dance as the gym was still being cleaned from the concert.

Students enjoyed Netflix Friday during snack before we had a story.

Students had their first practice lockdown today. We reviewed the process in the morning and after snack we heard the announcement, "lockdown lockdown lockdown". We then went into the coatroom and sat quietly until an officer came and gave us the a-okay to return to class. The students did a great job and should be proud of staying quiet during the practice.

We finished off the day with the earned time that the students earned over the course of the week. Students had a choice of:"
Ipads- Mathletics, razkids, starfall, and prodigy.
Puzzles, board games and sketching.
Students had a great time and were ready for the weekend.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Today:

We began our day with our usual ignite before heading off to library. Students enjoyed some quiet reading in the learning commons before gym in class. The gym was still set up for concert so students did go noodle with Mr Sadowsky.

After snack we did our student of the week writing. I only give the students the first word and last word in the sentence. Students have to use their sight words and letter sound knowledge to fill in the middle of the sentence.

After students finished a minimum of four sentences I gave them time on Mathletics which carried us to lunch.

After lunch we went to the grade 456 rehearsal for their concert this evening.
After a quick a quick recess we finished off our day by watching the last few minutes of Klaus (Health: How does the movies Klaus relate to our Kindness pillar of the month from November.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

Some exciting news!
Today we had a visit from a certain little trickster by the name of Elf on the Shelf!
Yesterday he left us a note and dumped some of our books on the carpet!
Today he appeared in our classroom on top of my projector!

The students spent some naming our elf and writing about how the elf got into the classroom. Tomorrow we will be learning about character descriptions and using it to describe our elf :)

We began our day with some catch up time to finish our journaling from the previous day. We then did our morning meeting and wrote our spelling words into our word work book.

During gym we had basketball and practiced our skills with bounce passes and chest passes.

In the middle block of the day we did our elf on the shelf writing which included names and how he got into the classroom!

We finished off our morning with some addition practice in which the students used tens grids to add two numbers. Students would would roll a die, color that number on a grid and then roll another number to add to the grid. Using two colors helps the students to picture the symbols that are addition and subtraction.

After music and lunch the students began researching the jobs in the prairies. We first recorded the most common natural resources that are found in the prairies and matched them with their corresponding job. Students were given ipads to research videos and info on the natural resource or job of their choice!

We finished off the day with a late recess before heading home!

Have a great day everyone!

Learning about our new pillar of the month: Perseverance

Today the students began their day with our usual ignite! Next time I will be bringing in play dough and clay to build with!

We then transitioned into doing our morning meeting where we discussed:
-The new month: December & Birthdays
-Pillar of the month
-Our plan for the day
-Weather
-Number of days in school
aaaaaand our new letter blend sh!

This week we will be starting spelling! 7-8 words with a couple bonus words. The spelling will not be for marks but it will support students in learning curriculum words and sight words to be used for projects and writing activities.

This weeks words:
she
name
are
book
said
what
want

Bonus Words:
magnet
natural
climate
resource

We then moved into word work where we focused on listening to a story about the sh blend and looked for words in our books. We brainstormed a large list to keep on our board for the week!

After gym and practicing different types of passes in basketball we had a snack before writing. Today I gave the students a chance to do some free writing. This type of writing allows students to freely write about any topic they want and from any perspective! Many students wrote about video games, favourite animals and what they do for fun in the winter.

During math, the students were given a place value assessment in which they had to use their understanding of tens and ones to find numbers on a number chart. They then extended their knowledge to identifying a specific digits place value and two word problems. We will be continuing this work tomorrow alongside exploring addition.

In the afternoon the students started their new routine of reading for the first half hour after lunch. With a fire crackling in the background the students enjoyed some time to calm and quiet before doing some art.

In art we used basic shapes and changing our technique with cutting to create different works of art.
These skills were used in cutting up different pieces of paper to make snowflakes for the winter concert.
Parents, I apologize for the mess if your children want to cut up the paper for this art project at home!

We ended the day with the earned time that students earned from Friday of last week.
Students used ipads to play mathletics, prodigy, word building and razkids. Students also had the option to draw, read or make some more snowflakes!

Overall a great day!

Have a nice weekend everyone!
Mr Lancee

Today I sent home the field trip form for our upcoming field trip. We need volunteers for the trip! If you have your police clearance we would love to have you join us :)
Today in room 5!

We began our day with our monthly pillars of care assembly. Congrats to the winners of the pillars of care and punctuality awards in room 5!
We also enjoyed the video of all the cool things BHS students did this month.
We finished off the assembly with the baby shark dance done by Mr Mahon and yours truly in a shark onesie! Kids really got a kick out seeing their teachers being silly. Way to go everyone for raising $400!

After our assembly the students did a math talk involving the estimation of chocolate within a jar.
They had to begin by seeing, thinking and wondering what they saw on the screen.
Next they saw some pics breaking down how many chocolates were in each bag and how many were left over. Students then had use their knowledge to break down the bags and figure out how many chocolates were in each bag. In the end watched a video explaining how to solve the problems. It was great to see all the students strategies for solving this multistep problem!
I wanted to post some pics of the experiment but I do not have access to the photos from the site.

Students then headed to the gym for a rehearsal of the song we will be performing at our Winter Concert with all students.

We finished off the day with a science lesson from our student teacher. We learned about different strengths of magnets and how magnetic fields will travel through an object. After some exploring with magnets and painting using magnetism we reached the end of our day.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend and stays warm!

Friday Nov 29 is the November Pillars of Care Assembly!
Just a reminder to make sure students are doing mathletics at home! I posted new assignments today :)

The Blend this week is CH!
Today in room 5!

We began our day with our morning meeting. After the usual month, day, weather and number of days in school we practiced counting to 100 by 10's and 5's. Students got a kick out of turning their backs to the screen to count to 100 without looking!

After morning meeting we had some quiet reading time in which I was able to read with some students. I am impressed by the growth this year in room 5 and how students are developing their independence.

After gym and some two handed catCHing lessons for basketball we transitioned into snack. While the students munCHed and crunCHed I read them the first chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After reading the students did a character sketch and added adjectives to write about Charlie!

During math today the students did their tri-weekly basic facts followed by some math games using our hundreds charts. Race to 100 and hundreds chart battleship were a huge hit!

In the afternoon the students did a large science experiment in which they tested the strengths of magnets. We used metal circles, screws, and paperclips as our materials to test!
The magnets we used were:

The block magnet had a handle which we called the wand.

Students predicted the amount of metal each magnet would pick up and then tested their magnet to find the result. The students were so excited see if their predictions would come true!

We finished off the day with an indoor recess before heading to music!

Hope everyone has a nice evening and stays warm :)

I wanted to inform everyone that an incident took place today in which the classroom had to be evacuated. The students quickly moved from our room into room 6 where we continued our writing.
Thank you.

Today the students began their day with a math talk using the problem:

Is it true?
8 > 5+5
If it is false...make it true.

It was great to see how students have been developing their number sense and using their addition skills to solve this problem! Students had to take it a step further to make it true...
See if you can solve it at home!

After morning meeting we moved into some quiet reading in which all the students read to self using their new leveled books.

After gym we returned to class and began to write about what kinds of pets would make a perfect pet! Students started brainstorming common animals and then transitioned into what it would be like to own some unusual pets like sharks or dinosaurs!

After lunch the students went to music before returning to class to do science. Today we looked at four different magnets: Bar, ring, horseshoe and wand. Tomorrow we will be testing the strength of these magnets!

We finished off our day by looking at the novel study, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! The reading of this novel will help to shape our writing for the next little while. Beginning with characters and settings.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

Today I sent home the Alberta Health Services Fluoride varnish dental consents for our Grade 2's. Please return the forms by Nov 27 to schedule your child's dental check up.

Today in room 5:

The students began their day with a quick morning meeting and practicing counting by 5's and tens from 5-100 and back! We then transitioned into a work block and working to finish our monster stories. I still have a few students that need to finish their stories tomorrow before we show them to parents on Thursday and Friday!

After an intense game of dodgeball (regular and don't throw your junk in my backyard) we headed back to class for snack.

As a class we explored the four ways to start stories creatively!
Great stories start with...
1. an action
2. a sound
3. thoughts or question
4. dialogue

These techniques get kids to write their stories with a creative edge over "Once upon a time"

In the afternoon the students went to music before returning to class.

For the last chunk of the day we explored the climate and weather of Saskatchewan. We discussed as a class what we would need if we were to travel their in both the winter and the summer. Students brainstormed that because the weather is similar to ours in Calgary we would need similar. We then used some cookie cutter people to draw the clothes they would need to bring.

Hope everyone has a nice evening and stays warm!

Movember donations graciously accepted by the students at lunch time just outside the learning commons. I can also take them from students to submit votes as well. Just to clarify, votes are for the worst mustache! If you want to see Mr Lancee with dyed hair and mustache then vote for him!

This week in room 5:

Language Arts:
Reading-Continuing our exploration of blends from last week with words that start with cl,pl and fl. Reading to self and someone to practice skills and strategies.

Writing- Working on beginning story strategies. Great ways to begin a story and revising our old stories. Also working on creating blends in word work!

Math:
Place value- specifically around expanded form of numbers. We are working towards playing a roll it, write it, expand it game. Expanded form= 31=30+1. This way of writing numbers helps kids to really see place value!

Social:
Prairies: Looking at bodies of water, climate, and jobs in the prairies this week.

Science:
Magnetism: exploring what metals magnets will attach to, as well the concepts of attract, repel, polarity and NS!

Today we began our day with ignite before our morning meeting.
We were practicing as a class how to count backwards from 100 today!
We were also learning about all the cl blend words such as claw, cloud, cliff and climb!

Next the students had a quick snack before heading off to gym.

Today the students used their monsters from the Monster Descriptive Writing to make a story.
Students had to make up a story about their monster and it could be about anything!
We will use these stories to shape our lessons in the next few days as we talk about beginnings.

We then learned in math how make the expanded form of numbers. Students were a bit confused as to why we can use addition at first, but they quickly got the hang of the basics!

In the afternoon we finished up our work with our buddies on creating IRIS goal strategies which we will be showing to parents on Thursday and Friday for student led conferences.

We finished our day learning about the bodies of water found in the prairies. We explored lakes, ponds, rivers and learned that their aren't any oceans in the prairies!

Have a great evening everyone!

Today!

The students began their day with a science lesson from Mr Sadowsky's student teacher.
She taught us a lesson in magnetism in which the students learned about the attraction and repelling of magnets.

Next we went to gym for some station time before Netflix Friday for 15 mins.

I gave the students a half hour block to read their library books and some free books donated to us by the TD bank!

We then had a math lesson in which were ordering numbers from least to greatest.

for example:

21, 35, 1, 7, 10
reordered as:
1, 7, 10, 21, 35

We finished off our day with cleaning the room before some relaxing earned time.
I will send an update with what we will be doing this coming week on Sunday :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I was away from school today but I wanted to inform the parents of a fundraiser taking place in our school!

The staff and students are supporting the Movember charity this month for cancer awareness for males. The men in the building are growing (attempting to grow) mustaches to raise awareness and have a competition to grow the best/worst mustache. Students can bring in donations of 1 dollar to vote for the mustache of their choice! The participants are:
Mr Lancee
Mr Berry
Mr Mueller
Mr Hebert
Mr Sadowsky
Mr Jackson
Mr Beechey
Mr Mahon
The gentleman with the least votes will have to dye their hair and mustache for the pillars of care assembly at the end of the month.

Also, if we raise $400, Mr Mahon and I will be dressing up as sharks and doing the baby shark dance in front of the school!

Thank you for all your help!

Wednesday, Nov 20th, Reverse Day - Students dress as teachers, teachers dress as students!
Fun lunch form sent home today!

Today an incident occurred in my classroom in which a student threw my classroom supplies around the room. The rest of the class was out of the room at this time so we did not need to do an evacuation. As a preventative measure I have moved all the students supplies off the shelves and up to a higher location. I have also placed locks on my cupboards for the safety of the students.
I am sorry for this change in routine and classroom layout but the students safety is my number one concern.

Today!
We began our day with a number talk in which the students looks at the picture below...

Students gave several answers.
False because the counting is not 231 or 312. 2+3 does not equal 1.
True because the counting is 123. or 321.
3 is 2+1.       3 is 1 and 2.     One student even noticed....red and blue make purple!

It was great to see how students verbally explain their thinking and defend their arguments!
After some quiet reading and gym we transitioned into word work in which the students wrote the words of the week in three forms! Rainbow, bubble and fancy!

As a class we explored writing numbers from 1-100 as place value blocks. We will continue this skill tomorrow!

In the afternoon the students went to music before we had some time to cut up our cities for Calgary mural. Tomorrow we will continue our exploration of Saskatchewan and the prairies!.

Have a great evening everyone!

Wednesday, Nov 20th, Reverse Day - Students dress as teachers, teachers dress as students!

Today the students began their day with Mr Sadowsky's student teacher doing an introductory lesson to magnets! Students were able to use predictions and small magnets to test what kind of objects in the room were magnetic!

We then went outside for gym before coming inside to have snack for netflix Friday! After the 15 minutes of netflix Friday the students did some exploration of the animals that were involved in WW1 and WW2. The students were amazed to see how elephants, pigeons, dogs, cats and even bears greatly helped soldiers in many ways.

Next the students went to the gym for our Remembrance day assembly.
Students listened to books, stories and songs dedicated to the memory of the soldiers.
It was a beautiful somber assembly and the students were extremely respectful.

We finished off our day with some catch up time before doing some razkids and mathletics on the ipads.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Wednesday, Nov 20th, Reverse Day - Students dress as teachers, teachers dress as students!

Today we began our day with Ignite before heading off to library.
Ms. P must have thought we did a great dance in library because she turned the library into a dance party with different songs of the students choice.

After gym with Mr Sadowsky we transitioned into our star of the week writing.
We are up six sentences each time we write about our star!

The students then had some time in math doing some place value practice. Students had to look at the number of tens and ones were in each picture before recording the totals. Next week we will be moving into regrouping with ones and tens in place value.

After lunch we had some time with our buddies making poppies for a large wreath for our remembrance day assembly.

We finished off our day watching part of a magnetism video to explore some magnets before our first lesson tomorrow in magnetism!

Hope everyone has a great evening!
Tomorrow is Friday!
Happy Wednesday Nov 6!
Apologies for the late blog! For some reason it did not want to post!
I will write another blog for this evening as well.

Today in room 5!

We began our day with our usual morning meeting.
Students then transitioned into dance where they jived and jazzed around the gym!

We then had some time after snack to start talking about blends at the beginning of words. todays blend was "bl". Students thought of words like blue, block, blonde and blew for the bl blend.
We then transitioned into a making words activity in which students were sheets and followed instructions on how to make words! We started simple with the vowel a and consonants c s r t.

Then we made at, art, tar, cat, cart, cat, star, stars and many many more!

Students then did their first number talk!

Without using paper, only discussion we talked about the equation 2+2=3+1 and whether the statement was true!
It was great to see all the opinions on whether the equation was true! What do you think parents? Talk with your child about the equation!

In the afternoon we examined the prairies' landforms. Students had to use their sight to think of words that matched the prairies and then draw the features of the landscape.

We finished off the day discussing melting! We used a hair dryer to melt ice and crayons!
It was amazing to see how solids can change states to liquids!

Please make sure you send your child with gloves, hats, mits, scarves or whatever they need to stay warm at lunch and recess!

Today the students began their day with Ignite! They were all very happy to be back at school after the long weekend doing their favorite morning activities.

We spent a chunk of time this morning talking about our new seating plan and the new addition to the classroom! We have started to use quiet critters!
These little critters sit at the students desk when they are working quietly. They cannot be touched and their are 18 different critters to see! The students were able to name them and write some descriptions for each quiet critter!
They were a huge hit!

After we wrote about our critters the students did their number of the week before lunch.

When we returned from lunch we went to check on a science experiment from the morning!
We placed some water in an ice cube and took it to the freezer. The water was left in the freezer for 3 hours before we checked it again. When we returned the water had changed states and was now a solid...ICE! We recorded our findings and went to recess. Students then played a game in which that had to write and represent different numbers from 1-100 on a chart. Tomorrow we will be re-practicing this skill but over several examples!

Have a great evening everyone!

Happy Thursday October 31st!

Reminders:
No school tomorrow!
Picture retakes are November 4th
Student led conferences will be in November. More information to come!

The students had a busy but great day today!

We began our day with ignite and trip to the library.
Ms. Paolini had the students rocking out and dancing to the monster mash!

After gym and snack students filled in their student of the week writing. It is great to see students copying speed and neatness increasing!

We then did our first official desk clean! I was quite impressed with how fast students got their desks back to clean.
We have a new desk plan next week in which the students will be getting a bit more independence with their school supplies!

After cleaning our desks we then counted all of the seeds that we carved from our classroom pumpkin! We had two estimates before counting. Everything from 30-30000 were the initial guesses. After seeing the bag of seeds students estimates were closer to actual amount. After counting in pairs we totaled up all the seeds to find....463 seeds!!! wow!

In the afternoon we had our pillars of care assembly before buddy time.

Congrats to the pillars of care winners and punctuality award winners!

I hope everyone has a safe evening and long weekend!
Happy Halloween and have fun trick or treating!

Happy chilly Tuesday Oct 29!

Welcome to our last week of October and today was a frosty one, but its getting warmer!

Reminders:
Orange and black day on Thursday Oct 31. Please no costumes at school.
Thursday is also our Pillars of Care assembly! 12:30 pm. I will announce the winners Wednesday!
No school Friday as it is a teacher PD day.

Today:
We began our day with our morning meeting leading into read to self. Students earned some time after read to self to read to someone!
Speaking of reading, I love how many students are completing their reading at home and earning hockey cards! Today I did not have time to hand them out at the end of the day so I will make sure everyone gets them tomorrow!

After reading we did our last day of soccer in phys. ed. Tomorrow we have dance again at 8:30 am!

After phys ed we did a whole class word work in which the students used scrabble tiles to make equations for spelling. Each letter was worth a number, they had to total up the numbers to find what their word was worth!

We then began our monster writing to describe our different monsters. Students had practiced this last week and we will be making this project for the rest of the week.

In the afternoon the students looked at our new pumpkin, "Kevin" and made an estimation about how many seeds were in the pumpkin. Tomorrow the students will be estimating how many seeds are in the bag of seeds I will pull out of the pumpkin. On Thursday we will count them all! Students also voted on the face they wanted for their pumpkin to be carved!

We finished off our day as botanists! Scientists of plants! Each student was given an ipad to research the different plants that can be found within Saskatchewan and the prairies. We then drew these plants and will be glueing them to a garden we will make in our classroom!

Have a great evening everyone!

We will be covering different word families that use vowels such as am, an, ad, at, et and ed. Students will also be practicing reading strategies and working to increase their reading levels!

Math: Students will be exploring place value up to 100. Students need to be able to write, draw and build numbers to 100. We will be using place value blocks, technology and games to solidify these ideas. Students will also be estimating and counting for our pumpkin competition using pumpkin seeds!

Social: The students took a plane to Saskatoon today! Our flight took us 1 hour and 6 minutes, better then 6 hours in a car! After a safety demonstration the students relaxed on their flight watching a video on the wonders of Saskatoon and their new Social concept, the prairies! This week we will be acting as botanists looking at the plants of the prairies.

Science: We are nearing the end of our liquids unit and only have a few concepts to cover. This week we will be focusing on the heating cooling of liquids!

So much fun to come in room 5!
Have a great night everyone:)

Orange and Black Day October 31. Please do not wear costumes, instead wear orange and black!
Please return lunch room forms asap
Please return hockey reading tracker each day you read to receive a new hockey card:)

Special note:
Today I sent home a sheet with the students blue folders. This sheet is to be used to track home reading to earn hockey cards for our Calgary Flames reading program. Each time they read 30 mins they will earn a new card. 24 Cards to earn plus some additional Harvey the hound cards!
I know that we also have my home reading sheets to fill in as well. It would be great to record it twice to show once the hockey sheets are no longer being used. But it is not mandatory. The important thing is that your child is reading :)
Everyone read in class for 30 mins today so I gave everyone a hockey card!
Go Flames Go!

Today in room 5!

We began our day with a quick morning meeting before starting some ipads. This 50 min block was split into two sections.

Students were given 25 mins to do razkids with leveled reading books.
Followed by 25 mins of mathletics to work on specific math activities.

In gym we continued to play some four sided crash mat soccer!

After our Netflix Friday for 15 mins while eating snack we did our student of the week writing.
It was great to learn so much about a member of our class!

After writing about the student of the week we transitioned into a very exciting science experiment.

We wanted to test the absorbency of different fabrics and materials.

The materials were as follows:
Wax paper
Sponge
Tin foil
Shamwow cloth
microfiber cloth
Napkin

Each material submersed in water for 10 secs and the squeezed into a measuring cup.  We measured the amount of water in terms of cups and ounces!

After some rigorous testing, we discovered...........

The least absorbent material was tin foil and wax paper!

The most absorbent material was a sponge holding 1 cup or 8 ounces of water!
Wahoo! The students prediction was correct!

After cleaning up the room the students headed out at the end of the day!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with Ignite! The students favorite way to start the day!

We then moved into the library for some quiet reading and taking out of new books.
Students did a great job and were thanked by Ms Paolini for their quiet work!

Next Mr Sadowsky took the students for gym and crash mat soccer! They shoot....They score!

After our snack we continued our monster writing from the previous day! Students used adjectives to describe monsters using their senses. What does your monster look, smell, sound and feel like?
I see some great writing coming from the young authors in room 5 :)

After writing we moved into math in which we did some place value centers. The students were given a tupperware with several different items and they count them using ones and tens. Once they counted the objects they showed me and I gave them a new tupperware! Great way to practice place value!

In the afternoon the buddies came to join us to make a mural of the Calgary city skyline! We are using a large piece of paper to make buildings, homes, trees, clouds and we will be turning it into a large mural to display in our classroom!

We ended the day by using water orbs to test our word of the week: ABSORBENCY!

Dry

After adding to water

 30 mins later

We will see what they look like tomorrow!

Have a great evening everyone!

Today!

We began our day with our Tuesday morning meeting focusing on our days of the week, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXMofxtDPUQ)
the weather, special events coming up, and the number of days we have been in school!

We then transitioned into some reading strategies. We focused our efforts today on...

This strategy involves using the first letter of a word and the picture to figure out the tricky word.

Students then put this strategy into play doing some read to self and read to someone.

After some intense games of soccer in the gym the students went back to class for a snack and a story.

We then moved into some word work stations practicing word families using am and an

Students found several words that used these family of words like ham, ran, ram, hand, and so many more!

We then did our tri weekly basic facts test in which the students answered 20 + &- questions. I use this data throughout the year to measure student growth!

After math, students had some time to finish writing their "what I did on the weekend". We use a walking story format to support students writing a minimum of 4 sentences with pictures!

In the afternoon students went straight to music before returning to class for a science experiment!

Today we tested how solids dissolve in liquids!
Ask your children if sugar, baking soda, and coffee grounds dissolve in water!

Have a great evening everyone!

Thank you all for keeping up with razkids, home reading and mathletics! The at home practice is so important for supporting students daily learning!

Today!

We began our day with working at the carpet to talk about the "The Size of a Problem!"

Image result for the size of a problem We are learning that depending on the size of a problem, there is also a reaction that should match. For example, breaking your pencil...should not a huge problem! It is a tiny problem that you can solve on your own! We will continue this work next week!

After some time on Mathletics we moved into gym and then reading buddies.

The middle part of our morning was reviewing the science experiment from the previous day and recording our findings in science journals.

We finished off our day by catching up on work from the week before clean up at the end of the day!

Have a great weekend everyone :)
