Good afternoon and happy Monday March 30!

I just wanted to write one blog message today thanking everyone for their patience with setting up online schooling and working from home.

If you have any questions, email me at malancee@cbe.ab.ca

I was able to reach out to everyone today with questions about online accessibility and apologies for the Ontario phone number! I will be working from home and the calling system on my computer uses an Ontario number oddly enough. From here on out my main mode of contact will be through email, school messenger and when it is ready, the new online platform! We are gearing up to start next week but I will keep you posted with details as we find them out.

For this week:

-Keep up with daily reading
-Do some journaling about what you have read. (Optional)
-Use online resources such as:
         -Razkids
         -Mathletics
         -Prodigy

Also, visit our website for some extra activities to do as well!

https://sites.google.com/a/educbe.ca/bhs-grade-2/home

Below are some helpful pictures that will help you get connected with our online classroom. This will not be started until next week but feel free to log in :)

The two programs we will be using are google meet and google classroom.

Enjoy this time at home with your families and stay safe!

Miss having you all as my students!

Some unfortunate news... Due to the concerns from Alberta Health the school has to unfortunately cancel fun lunch and the spring dance next week. We will also be rescheduling our Pillars of Care assembly. Sorry for the inconvenience I am happy to answer questions.

Today in room 5:

Beddington had many students away today and so we modified our day accordingly.

The students began their day with the usual morning meeting before moving into mathletics. We did several assignments, most of which were related to subtraction as we have been practicing this all week!

After math we had gym before our regular snack flix.

The students then participated in some visual literacy focusing around the pillar of the month: responsibility!

We cleaned up the room before heading out for the weekend!

Have a great weekend everyone!

With everything that has been going on with the Corona Virus worries I wanted to provide some info on what we in school are doing to care for the students and ourselves.

Caretaking staff in all schools have increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols on high touch points (example: door knobs, light switches, desk tops, etc.) throughout CBE schools.
§  CBE schools will remind students of good hand washing techniques and new posters will be provided to reinforce this.
§  The CBE has a supply contract for all necessary soap, sanitizer, and cleaning/disinfecting supplies. This supply is reliable and readily available.
§  If you are sick, do not come to school Please report your absence.
§  If you have symptoms such as fever, cough and difficulty breathing, have travelled outside Canada or have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, stay home and call Health Link 811.

Today in room 5!

Students began their day in the classroom with a short class meeting before heading into some quiet reading time. It was nice to switch up our usual reading time from the afternoon to the morning.

After reading we transitioned into math and continued to practice subtraction questions using manipulatives. Today we used the grids again with some square blocks. I noticed a large increase in the students speed and accuracy as they worked to finish 20 questions! They are getting it :)

We then had snack before continuing our writing from the previous day. We are working to add more detail to our Mushroom Kingdom stories before we start to edit them tomorrow!

Our class had gym just before lunch in which they played hockey!

In the afternoon the students had mindfulness doing quiet meditation before moving into science. Today we watched The Magic School Bus, Into the Arctic. We were learning about the concepts of insulation, cold weather and animal adaptations. We are going to explore these concepts more we test a science experiment tomorrow!

We finished off our day with music before packing up for the end of the day.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

Keep up with the mathletics and reading at home :)

I had more stuff we did not get to but I will save it for another day.

Students have also been working hard in math to use manipulatives to support their subtraction.
The questions we have been covering are all 2 digit by 1 digit numbers such as: 19-6.
We will be progressing into using number lines as the week goes on!

We also explored the reversible and irreversible effects of cooking, freezing, melting and burning.

Parents, have a talk with your children tonight about the things you make for dinner and whether or not the changes can be reversed!

Happy Wednesday Mar 4 2020!

Apologies for the lack of blogs yesterday and Friday. I had to leave on Friday due to an injury (I am a-okay!) and I was sick yesterday.

Reminders:
Today I sent home two forms:
1. Fun lunch forms
2. March newsletter and calendar

Some students also went home with Care Sheets regarding behavior expectations which should be signed and returned tomorrow.

Today in room 5:

Students began their day with taking some time write some apologies to the sub from yesterday. There were several unexpected behaviors from students and as so they needed to write up some care sheets. The other students were given some time on ipads doing mathletics, raz kids, or prodigy as a thank you for showing expected behaviors. It is important for students to understand that subs deserve the same respect as any teacher, principal, support staff or student in the school.

Next we moved into Math,

During this block students were given time to learn some tips and tricks for word problems.

We use a strategy called CUBS!

Circle the numbers
Underline the question
Box the math words
Solve the problem!

We will be doing word problems for the rest of the week and continuing them each Friday.

We start with simple one step problems and moved into larger/2 step problems.

Starting this week every Wednesday we will have gym at 11:00 instead of 9:00.

We moved from math into snack before continuing the writing from part 2 of our instead I project. We are pushing to finish this by the end of the week and turn it into a large book!

After writing we headed off to gym for floor hockey. I split the students into four teams and we played free for all hockey before heading off for lunch.

In the afternoon the students did an excellent job of mindfulness with 10 mins of quiet meditation.

We finished off our afternoon with some rehearsals of how to lose friends...Did you read that correctly? Yes! We looked into all the ways to lose friends such as: being rude, whining, saying i'm not your friend, and shouting at friends. These are just some of the ways we lose friends. After discussing these ideas we then turned it positive by brainstorming ways to keep/make friends!

Students then created little skits using pre selected situations to present to the class. Students did a great job of acting out kind ways to handle problems and help their classmates.

After a great music class the students returned to pack up and head home for the day.

Have a great evening everyone!
