Happy Wednesday Feb 26, 2020

Reminders:
Feb 28- Pillars of Care Assembly
No school next Monday!

Today the students began their day with a new morning message!
I have been using the morning message as a way to get students comfortable with reading aloud and finding mistakes in writing. Students have been responding very well to this each day and cannot wait to read it!

Below was the message from today:

We also honored pink shirt day today by tallying every time the students showed acts of kindness and caring throughout the day! I have to say, the students did an excellent job of this in the morning! We got over 12 different acts of kindness!

In math today we continued to work on double digit addition with regrouping. I am posting some questions as practice for those students and parents that would like to practice at home!

After math we went to gym to practice our skipping before heading off to snack.

Students were introduced to the second part of their Instead I project in which we started to write our calming strategy writing. We will continue this tomorrow!

After writing the students had some time to practice scenarios for showing kindness with their peers. We practiced how to show kindness and then made sponge flowers of kindness to post on our door!

After lunch the students did some mindfulness coloring while listening to music before silent reading. We had some difficulty focusing on the silent reading today and we will be trying again tomorrow!

We finished off our day with a class meeting to discuss some of the problems we have been having with our peers. We understand that we are a class but we are also a community that must coexist and work well together. Kids finished up with a handshake, high five or fist bump before heading off to music.

Hope everyone has a great day!
Thank you to all the students and teachers who wore pink shirts today!

Feb 28- Pillars of Care Assembly
No school next Monday!

Just a reminder that we have pink shirt day tomorrow to honor anti bullying month. Show your support tomorrow!

Today we had our Jump Rope for Heart Assembly!
Some volunteers came in today to raise awareness for heart and stroke. Students loved hearing about all the prizes they could win for raising funds! They also enjoyed watching the teachers have a jump competition to wrap up everything. I sent home a folder for students to collect donations. Some students did not get a form today and will be given one.

One more final thing... a phone went missing today from a student in div 2 today.
Below is a description:

The make and model is a Samsung Galaxy J3.  The colour is black with a large sticker on the back of it which looks like stained glass and the character “Link” from the Zelda video game.  I was able to get the serial number (IMEI) from my purchase contract. The IMEI is 359229090701360.  The screen saver while in the lock screen is a picture of a green car made out of Lego.  The phone has a pattern lock on it as well.

Have a great day everyone!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with ignite to get ourselves ready for the day.

We immediately followed this with a quick morning meeting before having some time to practice regrouping with addition. We will be practicing this skill all week!

During gym we had some time to use the skipping ropes to practice our jump rope leading up our assembly tomorrow!

In the block after snack we returned to our student of the week writing. It was great to learn about our classmate and the students did a great job of writing about them!

We finished off our morning with some word work games before lunch. I bought three new games: POP, Sight word bingo, and bananagrams. These were a huge hit!

In the afternoon we had some silent reading time before revisiting why the prices between Iqaluit and Calgary are so different! We will finish exploring this tomorrow!

We finished off our day with a little science experiment.
We observed the changes caused by adding heat to popcorn kernels!

Up close on a camera the students were so excited to watch the popcorn transform from tiny kernels to puffy cloud like popcorn! We learned that the moisture inside the kernels is the reason that popcorn may or may not pop!

Hope everyone has a great evening!

Feb 28- Pillars of Care Assembly

WOOHOO it's Friday!

Today we began our day with the regular Mathletics practice on IPads for the first hour of the day. The students did such a great job with completing their assignments that I gave them some time to play prodigy for the last 10 minutes. Prodigy is similar to mathletics, but with a fantasy leveling up system.

After Math we headed to gym for station time. Today's stations included lacrosse, stretching, basketball and badminton.

We then returned to class for snackflix before heading off to buddies.

During buddies today we worked with our grade 5 buddies to edit and type our instead I stories from this week. Next week we will be starting part 2 of our instead I writing.

We finished off our day with some quiet reading before earned time.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Today in room 5:

We began our day with the usual ignite before heading off to the library.

During library the students were able to search for their books and then have some silent reading time. If students have overdue books and cannot find them they will have to be paid for.

Students then went to gym before returning to class for snack.

After snack I gave the students some time to work on the writing of their Instead I project. Everyone is nearly finished their writing and we will be finishing them tomorrow! Next week we will be starting and finishing the second part of the task before we make them into a large book.

We finished our morning off with a science lesson in which we rapidly heated and cooled the classroom. Students worked in pairs to brainstorm ways that we can cool off or heat up a room if needed. Opening windows, doors, fans, air conditioners are all great ways to cool off a building. Fireplaces, furnaces, putting on warm clothes are great ways to fight the cold in a cool building.

In the afternoon we did another skip counting assessment to compare to our previous tests. Some students still need to finish tomorrow before mathletics.

We finished off our day with learning about price differences between Iqaluit and Calgary. It is crazy how different the prices are between the two locations!

Today in room 5:

Today we were all feeling the care for others and kindness as we shared in Valentines Day.

We began our day with an addition scavenger hunt. Students searched the room for different math problems that included 1x1digit, 2x2 digit and some word problems.  There were 22 problems in the room to find all of which the students were able to attempt. In specific spots there were also blocks or rulers to support their addition strategies.

After gym (just dance party) in the classroom (gym was occupied) we had snackflix and watched a bit of the Lorax.

We then transitioned into sitting in a circle and sharing who we cared for in our lives. This sharing circle was a driving force behind creating cards for their fellow classmates. Each student made one card for all of their classmates that included a positive message.

In the afternoon we created some bags for the students to store all of the cards and after recess we handed all of the cards out. It was a fun and surprisingly calm fun activity for the students in room 5.

We finished the day with before heading home for a 5 day weekend :)

Hope everyone enjoys the break and comes back rested and ready for a great week!

Good evening parents and students.

I want to start off by reminding everyone that tomorrow is our last day before the break! 5 days off for you all wahoo!

Secondly, I just wanted to remind students of the rules and routines that we had to discuss today.

In BHS and room 5 there is absolutely no name calling, put downs or any kinds of pushing and shoving. We use our words and keep our hands to ourselves. If the problem goes beyond this point students should seek an adult to help them. I will be sending home "Care Sheets" for students to fill out with parents as a way of reviewing what happened and how to have a plan for next time. We are also working on this in class using our calming strategies and conflict resolutions!

Just a quick reminder about the snow.... snow stays on the ground. Students have been throwing snow at lunch and recess and it is against school rules. If someone was to get hit by a snowball filled with ice or rocks it could really hurt someone.

The snow hill beside the compound is also off limits. This has been always this way and it is a safety precaution. Thank you for your support with these rules parents :)

Hope everyone has a great evening and stays warm from the blizzard coming down!

Today in room 5:

After the usual ignite we returned to class for a quick morning meeting before math. Today I had the students complete an addition check in to see how they are doing so far. Below is the quiz I gave.

We brainstormed as a class several of the strategies we use to solve these problems!

Fingers, pictures, tallies, split it up, traditional regrouping, and hundreds charts were just some of the strategies we used!

I will be marking them this week and using some of the data to best support my students.

After math we headed off to gym for Monday stations before heading back to class for snack.

For health/LA today we explored different feelings related to situations through charades. At first we started with just the feelings and acting it out to see if kids could recognize them. We then moved onto acting out a feeling from a scenario like "A boy broke your favourite pencil"

This paved the way for starting our next writing project based off the Instead I book!

We will be doing our planning today and tomorrow solely around 4 sections:

1. Where are you?
2. What is happening? (Problem)
3. How are you feeling?
4. What are you doing?

By drawing pictures and writing about how they feel after a problematic situation students will be able to create the second half of the writing project in which they write about how they calmed themselves. The final product will be a large book to keep in the classroom that helps with handling tough situations and calming our feelings. "It's okay to be mad and sad! It is not okay to be mean or hurtful."

In the afternoon we did mindfulness before a short reading block.

After reading we began to explore temperature of our bodies. Our body rests at roughly 37 degrees celsius. When we do something like exercise it rapidly increases our body temp and we begin to sweat to cool down! Tomorrow we will be exploring this in more detail.

We finished off our day painting using water color paints for our Ted Harrison art. We will finish these off tomorrow and put them on the walls for all to enjoy!

Have a great evening everyone!

Feb 25- Jump Rope for heart assembly
Feb 28- Pillars of Care Assembly

Thank you to all the students and parents that joined us for Math Night last night! It was an absolute hit and we had the highest attendance in years!

This week in room 5:

Students have been working hard in Language art this week creating their, "If you give a mouse a cookie" stories. The stories have been finished and have been posted onto the wall of our classroom.

In math we were a bit all over as we did a mix of addition and skip counting. We have started a game each day in which we skip count as a class. We start at zero and count in a circle by 2's, 5's and 10's. Each time we count we do a practice before recording the total we skip counted to.
We have also been doing several math talks focusing on building students skills with verbalizing their math ideas! I introduced the students to a double digit addition strategy in which they split the question into tens and ones. This strategy is great for helping with place value but it can be tricky as it is new for the students.
Ex.

24+13=
3+4=7
20+10=30
30 + 7= 37

Try some at home!

Next week we will be trying out this strategy with regrouping alongside our usual math.

Today the students got to have an hour of Mathletics to start their day. Students have quite a few assignments to work on and practice makes perfect!
We have also created a class prodigy that we can play when students earn time after mathletics or if they are showing expected behaviors.

Speaking of Expected behaviors......
This week the students have been working hard to understand the difference between expected and unexpected behaviors. Expected behaviors are the behaviors we want to see and the way we should act in class! We have done a great job brainstorming and creating a poster for all the students in the room to look at each day.

We finished off our day with working on our current art project. We are creating Ted Harrison inspired Iqaluit landscape paintings using water colors. When we all finish I will take a picture and post it to the blog for all to see :)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Mr Lancee

Today in room 5:

After the regular ignite we transitioned into a quick calendar before starting Math.
I have revised the schedule so that we do math after our morning meeting each day.

During this time we did a great math talk in which the students had to balance a scale (equation) using the following numbers:

_ & _ = 5 & 3

Try it at home!

After gym and snack we moved into health in which we worked as a class to come up with the expected and unexpected behaviors we see in class. Students did a great job coming up with ideas for both behaviors we want to see and do not want to see in class.
Students then had to draw their ideas into a chart which we will use to cut and create a large poster for expected and unexpected behaviors in the classroom!

Students then had a chance to use some catch up time before lunch for all the projects we have on the go. This is being added into our daily routine as we always have things to finish :)

In the afternoon the students had mindfulness before a short independent reading block.

We finished up our day by learning about hot safety. We watched a video from Rover the Safety dog all about hot things in the Kitchen and household. Students then brainstormed hot objects and were tasked with creating a poster to inform students and adults about Heat safety. We will finish these tomorrow!

Have a great evening everyone!
