Happy Monday Sept 30

Hope everyone had a nice weekend playing in all of our September snow!

Today the BHS showed support for Orange Shirt Day. Students and teachers dressed in orange to educate and bring awareness to indigenous families effected by residential schools. We then went for a walk around the BHS neighborhood to raise awareness in the community. If you have further questions please visit orangeshirtday.org

This week in room 5:

Language Arts: We will be continuing to build on our stamina for read to self. We will also be doing some mini lessons teaching students about reading different word families. These skills directly translate into our mini lessons on writing sentences!

Science: We will be continuing our exploration of liquids specifically focusing on viscosity. How well does it flow?!

Social: We will be focusing on our community comparing our home, neighborhood, and province to other communities in Canada.

Math: We will be continuing our exploration of increasing and decreasing patterns!

Please make sure you send your child with snow pants, mitts, hats and all other attire for the snow :)

Have a great evening everyone!

After our assembly the students enjoyed a tasty snack and exercise break before doing reading buddies. All the students went with their buddies and read their books from the library!

After reading the students had some time to work on ipads doing their mathletics assignments. I have given all their students the log ins and they can practice at home!

Happy Wednesday Sept 25

Reminders:
Walking Fieldtrip next Monday in the afternoon! We will send home permission forms tomorrow
Pillars of care assembly Friday at 8:30! Winners will be announced in room 5 tomorrow!
Orange shirt day Monday!

Today we began our day with our soft start! Students loved using drawing, reading or playdough as a way to happily begin their day.

Next we worked in our math books creating some repeating patterns! abbabbabba for example.
Tomorrow we will be starting our growing patterns...tricky stuff!

After math we headed to gym and then snack in the classroom.

During LA we talked about the three different sounds an "a" can make and words with the word "and" inside! Students brainstormed and found words like band, sand, hand all contain and!

We spent some time learning about our star of the week! We interviewed a student and did some writing about their favourite food, games and pets. On Friday they will be able to bring in one item for Show and share!

Today the students had their minds blown as talked some of the characteristics of the water! We word webbed the description of calm water in a glass through a camera. Words like flat, see through, clear were just some of the ways we described the calmness of a liquid. Next we did a prediction of the appearance of water drops. Every student predicted they looked like a cartoon tear drop when in fact... they look closer to a sphere!

The water drop is often seen as it drips off something like a leaf or faucet. Then it turns in to a perfect sphere!

Science Rules!!!

Have a great evening everyone!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Reminders:

1. I am still missing a few forms for digital citizenship. Please return them ASAP
2. Tomorrow is Terry Fox Day and we will be doing our run around the school from 1:45-2:15. Please make sure you bring a water bottle and outdoor shoes to join in the run and remember this Canadian hero and your loved ones.
3. Pillars of Care assembly Friday!

Important:
Today we watched an important video that informed the students about Terry Fox. He was such an import Canadian Hero for Cancer research and awareness. Please talk to your children about Terry Fox and any questions they have. The day can be emotional and it is important to talk things out.

Today we began our day with a quick calendar before doing some basic facts review! These types of review help me to see where we are, and where we will go with our numbers!

After gym on the compound the students all did read to self for a total of 8 minutes! This time we are hoping to increase to 15 minutes before we start read to someone!

Next I introduced the students to Student of the Week! This student will be interviewed one day by the kids so that we can learn all about them! We will be interviewing one student Wednesday and on Friday they can bring something for show and tell :)

We finished inside out before starting our zones of regulation lesson! In this lesson I had the students draw the emotions related to the zones and we talked as a group about how we move red, blue or yellow into green! We will be starting this project tomorrow!

We ended our day with looking at a map of the marathons that Terry Fox ran. We will be filling in the actual route tomorrow before doing our Terry Fox run.

Have a great evening everyone.

VERY IMPORTANT: Please do not allow your children to bring toys to school. They are a giant distraction and usually end up on my desk. Toys have gone missing in the past and we want to do everything possible to avoid tears throughout the day. Thank you.

It has come to my attention that my blog may be releasing a date late. I apologize for the confusion and I am working to fix it.

Today:

Students began their day with our usual calendar talking about the month, days, weather, and how many days we have been in school. We have also been practicing skip counting by 2's using videos and a fancy hundreds grid as seen below!

In Math students began to create different kinds of patterns using blocks!
I will post some pictures of work tomorrow!

After math we had our silent reading time in which students began to use their new book boxes. These boxes have books at their level, the level above and a book of choice. We will also add their library books next week.

After reading we worked on a free writing piece in which the students could write anything they wanted about a picture of a classroom. Before the writing we brainstormed ideas and words they could use in their writing.

In the afternoon we had a special guest teacher who worked with the students and read a story before heading off to music!

Today the students had their first experience in grade 2 with "read to someone" during our Language arts time. I was quite impressed with how engaged and focused the students were during this paired reading time!

Students were able to visit the gym today for their first assembly of the year. In the assembly we met all the teachers and learned about our new pillar: Belonging!

We will be doing work all month showing the learning around the concept of belonging. Parents, ask your child what belonging means to them!

Monday we will be starting our IGNITE program for a half hour. This whole school program allows students to move to a room and participate in one of several activities to warm up their brains and start the week in a positive way!

Happy Wednesday September 4, 2019
This is my first blog for our year in grade 2!
Every reminder and upcoming date will be in this blog so try to check it everyday!

Reminders:
Please sign and return all forms sent home in the start of the year packet by September 10
Please make sure you send your student with a water bottle to limit trips to the bathroom
Please make sure a pair of outdoor/indoor shoes has been sent to school to keep our building clean

The following is a breakdown of how our day went:
We started our day with a morning meeting. I do the morning meeting first thing everyday to make sure students feel welcome, say good morning and do a couple of activities to get their brains going.
We start with a greeting where all students say good morning and we review the rules.
Afterwards we have Calendar which covers days of the week, birthdays and special events.
Next is the number of days in school, which we be keeping track of all year long.
Finally we ended with some open math on whiteboards in which students wrote down all the different ways to make 2.

After morning meeting the students were given some time to fill in their "all about me" sheets. These sheets allow the students to fill in boxes with words and pictures that explain who they are!

After gym we returned to class to talk have some reading time. During read to self my expectation is no talking, read the books you chose, and use the pictures to help you with reading the story.

After reading we transitioned into some writing time. It was during this time that we began our first journal entry:
My Summer Vacation!
We started this journal entry today and will continue with it tomorrow.

After lunch the students transitioned into a story to calm and regain their attention before starting math.
In math we talked about tools and some basic strategies they can use to solve one step addition problems.
The students were given time to come up with their ideas and draw a picture before creating solving some questions on their own.
Below are some examples of the questions we practiced:
4+5=
7+4=
9+3=

After math the students had recess and finally their first music class with Mr Wiens. Mr Wiens took the students on a tour of the school while playing music the entire time!

Hope the students had a great second day in grade 2!
Have a wonderful Wednesday evening!
Mr Lancee
