Thank you to all the students and parents that joined us for Math Night last night! It was an absolute hit and we had the highest attendance in years!

This week in room 5:

Students have been working hard in Language art this week creating their, "If you give a mouse a cookie" stories. The stories have been finished and have been posted onto the wall of our classroom.

In math we were a bit all over as we did a mix of addition and skip counting. We have started a game each day in which we skip count as a class. We start at zero and count in a circle by 2's, 5's and 10's. Each time we count we do a practice before recording the total we skip counted to.
We have also been doing several math talks focusing on building students skills with verbalizing their math ideas! I introduced the students to a double digit addition strategy in which they split the question into tens and ones. This strategy is great for helping with place value but it can be tricky as it is new for the students.
Ex.

24+13=
3+4=7
20+10=30
30 + 7= 37

Try some at home!

Next week we will be trying out this strategy with regrouping alongside our usual math.

Today the students got to have an hour of Mathletics to start their day. Students have quite a few assignments to work on and practice makes perfect!
We have also created a class prodigy that we can play when students earn time after mathletics or if they are showing expected behaviors.

Speaking of Expected behaviors......
This week the students have been working hard to understand the difference between expected and unexpected behaviors. Expected behaviors are the behaviors we want to see and the way we should act in class! We have done a great job brainstorming and creating a poster for all the students in the room to look at each day.

We finished off our day with working on our current art project. We are creating Ted Harrison inspired Iqaluit landscape paintings using water colors. When we all finish I will take a picture and post it to the blog for all to see :)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Mr Lancee
